Ever since I heard their rendition of Nero's Crush On You and their Ibiza Essential Mix, I've had the major itch to see these guys live. They finally made their west coast debut at The Wiltern 2 weeks ago. I recruited the other guys from The Beatbenders the group formerly known as The Beatbenders to tag along. It's been a while since the 4 of us got together. Opening acts by Codes and Kill The Noise. Good times fellas.
Soooooooooooo.... This night was supposed to be a pretty chill night in the OC. It would have been my first time at Mesa in Costa Mesa. Noelle and Nanceely were visiting Alison for the weekend, so I drive up to meet them up. Then we get the last minute change of plans from Sheryl. "We're going to Icon now." Oyyeeee...... Not my favorite spot for a Friday night but you gotta go with the flow. We pull up and the line is wrapped around the block. Turns out that Big Sean is in the building. And the cover? $50 per person. F********ck that! Thank you Myron for getting us in for free and buying a few rounds. It made the night bearable to say the least. The spot was so packed during the performance that we opted for the rooftop bar until the crowd died down a bit. Then we headed to the VIP for the rest of the night. We ended the night with El Flamming Taco and Jenga. #randomnights
Happy birthday JR!
Watch out for that bottle...
Little Thuggies...
EL FLAMING TACO! I missed you...
Damn drunkass girls!
And JENGA. Way to go Als...
"Watch, Jamie's gonna rip that box open like it's her birthday..."
I gotta hand it to Fitz and Dave. They know how to host a house party. Lights set up. Drinks chilled. DJs hired. Fog machines and lasers?! Sheesh. Thanks for hosting guys. The night was a blast. Lots of old, new, and even newer friends. My world gets smaller with each weekend.
D-Ko's been on a mission to discover more of Orange County since she's moved down here. And she's definitely gotten a better scope of the land in the past few months than I have in the past 5 years. I don't mind. She does the scouting report, and get some good recommendations out of it!
Her current mission was to find some jazz music. We hit up the Old Shipe in Santa Ana, and got some awesome blues music instead courtesy of Stoney B and crew with a side of a good beer selection on tap. The crowd was a little on the older side, but no matter when you got an awesome act performing.
As I was walking out of the bathroom, Stoney B himself tapped me on the shoulder and said "HEY YOU GOT MY $5 RIGHT?!" Realizing I wasn't the guy he was looking for, he quickly apologized. No harm, no foul! Then on our way out of the bar he apologized again, followed by this series of questions: You're driving home right? You got a car? And of course you got a CD player in that car... You NEED to buy my CD! Come on blood it's only $10... I'll even sign it for you!
Well played Stoney B... We had to get a picture so that I can get that certificate of authenticity.
Onward to the Copper Door. I've been to Proof and Crosby before, but never here. The crowd was closer to my age and more familiar with my scene. And once again, good beers on tap. This place is hipster heaven.
We also got some live Portuguese jazz/samba/rumba sounds along with some Dilla and Little Brother during the intermission. I need to come here more...
Closed with some decent Mexican food. Cheers to random nights!
I've got 2 weeks of blogging to catch up on. Luckily this first week of February was time for me to rest my social butterfly wings.
My little cousins wanted to take me out for my birthday! Birthday month was over, but how could I say no to that? They wanted to hit up Gen-Sushi, but the wait was for 1.5 hours. So we drove across the freeway over to Gyu-Kaku Tustin just in time for some awesome happy hour prices.
Cuzzin and brudder.
This whole pitcher was all for me! I got full pretty quickly.... -__- And buzzed too! ^__^
Happy hour prices are unbeatable. We barely spent enough to cover the $15/person minimum.
For some reason, we also ordered appetizers after the meat...
Extra saucy. At least that's what I asked for...
An hour later, our calamari came out.
The waiter felt so terrible that he gave us free ice cream! Starting top left going clockwise: blueberry cheesecake, lychee, green tea, and coffee.
Somehow we weren't satisfied with this and went across the street to Yogurtland anyway. Cereal toppings > all other toppings
Thanks again for dinner Cassie and Nicole!! Family SWAGon.
Ah the finale of my birthday month, Jomoery (nice one Ma). Skrillex was concluding his week-long tour in LA and closed it out at the LA Live 360 rotating stage. Cool concept. Spacious venue. Sh*tty acoustics. Unless you were standing by the stage, you couldn't really feel the music so much. And when you WERE by the stage, the bass was destroying your ear drums (check the video at the end of the post for some shattering bass). Still an awesome way to end the weekend though. Opening acts were Nadastrom, Dada Life, and Benga. Skrillex himself brought a few special guests on stage, as well as a fair share of freaks: go-go dancers, The Avengers, wrestlers, and a midget version of the Village People. Only in LA.

The line took almost an hour! We missed most of Dada Life. :(
But we still got to see the last 20 minutes of their set!
Benga brought the pain! And he brought out Dillon Francis for a short set too!
