Mos Def x Black Thought x Eminem BET Awards 2009 Cypher

3 of the best freestyle artists to make it big in my opinion (minus Snoop).

Laker Bling

It's RING NIGHT in Los Angeles and the big talk is the rings themselves in town.

Via NBA.com
It wasn't enough that the Los Angeles Lakers notched their 15th championship last season in their 30th NBA Finals appearance, more appearances than any other NBA franchise. They had to go and rub it in with what can only be described as the most fabulous of NBA championship rings yet.

The Lakers went true Hollywood style and contracted a jeweler to the stars (and some of their players) to bling out their 2008-09 championship rings. Lakers fans better have their shades ready during the ring presentation on Tuesday night because this ring is sure to blind.

Some key facts on the the Lakers' championship ice:

Laker gold -- Most rings are 14-karat gold but the Lakers' high-profile jeweler, Jason of Beverly Hills, created a special batch of 15-karat Laker gold to commemorate their 15th NBA championship. The ring is made of both white and yellow gold and was built from seven different parts that had to be assembled. Most rings are built as one unit.

Bling that'll blind -- The ring is comprised of 15 diamonds weighing in at 2.85 carats.

Home court advantage -- The Lakers' rings mirror the shape of the exterior of their home arena, the Staples Center. When viewed from the side, you can see the "roof" and "sides" of the Lakers' home court.

Personalization -- In the past every player has had their name and number on the side of their ring. The Lakers went a step above that and laser engraved the image of each player's face on his ring.

Lock-down defense -- Each ring boasts a hand-selected, diamond-engraved "L". The "L" is placed in a different position on each player's ring and is only viewable with a high-powered microscope. This helps authenticate each players piece. For further security and authentification, every ring has a serial number which is stored in a database that only the Lakers themselves and the jeweler can access.

Hollywood packaging, too -- Each ring will be presented in an oversized box roughly the size of a watch box. When opened, each box has two built-in LED spotlights that shine on the ring. Even the ring itself gets royal treatment: it is mounted on a rotating mechanical platform.

New Purchases

I was doing pretty well the past couple of months in not spending too much money just so I can save up for the holiday and any potential trips. That kind of all went to hell this past weekend.

Blends for Converse 1HUND(RED) One Stars. Designed by the owners of Blends, Tak Kato and Mike Toe, these classics feature the use of deerskin leather and waxed cotton laces. The result? BUTTER! A portion of the proceeds goes towards fighting AIDS in Africa, [sarcasm] the primary reason why I bought these. [/sarcasm] And for those who don't know, those are the Blends x Nike AM95 IDs in the background. Word.

Always supporting the local spot!

Alliance by Mosley Tribes. Oliver Peoples was having their annual sale. These retail at $235, but were marked down to $85! Thanks for the heads up on the sale Cha!

NBA 2K10 and Uncharted 2. I have yet to play 2K10, but have been playing Uncharted 2 and it is INSANE.

I also got a new jacket and a cardigan from H&M. I REALLY need to get to selling those shoes on eBay now...

Game 5: Angels vs Yankees @ Slater's 50/50

Bruce just finished taking his GMATs and wanted to go to happy hour. We hit up Slater's 50/50 for some appetizers and beer.

Blue Moon. $2 off domestic pitchers.

Buffalo chicken strips. 50% off. I love this spot.

Brimo decided to join us.

And Jasmine.

The Angels had an early 4-0 lead. Lackey definitely held it down.

But then we were down 6-4 after Lackey was pulled. But we rallied and came out on top 7-6. KENDRY! Screw you Teixeira, you rich bastard.

We're sending it back to New York bitches! Rally monkey.

Game 4: Angels vs Yankees @ Angel Stadium

Denson hit me up on Monday because he had an extra ticket available for Game 4 of the 2009 ALCS between the Angels and the Yankees. I haven't been to Angel Stadium since it opened back in late 90's. I had to rep for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The set: Denson, Simon, Angel.

Our seats were in right field right under the huge scoreboard. We were surrounded by a gang of Yankee fans all around.

Sea of red. Soowoo.

Bobby!

Rally monkeys.

GO ANGELS! (and Pepsi.)

I'm pretty sure these shoes are bad luck. Everytime I've worn them to watch the Angels anywhere, They lost. Never again.

The seats were still filled by the 7th inning.

And here's right after the loss.

F*cking Yankees. Goddamn you Cece. At least we didn't get shutout like the Dodgers.

I wish I went to Game 5, not 4.

Kanye West x Spike Jonze - We Were Once A Fairytale (Short Film)

Back in September Kanye premiered what was to be just a music video for his track Nightmares, directed by Spike Jonze. It ended up becoming a short film that he showcased at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It features cameos from Eric Koston (0:50 mark), Mike Carroll (0:51), and Fonzworth Bentley (3:41).

This is some weird sh*t. And the montage of the blurred vision/moments of wandering in the club is something I can definitely relate to. Humping leopard-print couch cushions with my pants down? Not so much.

Via Nah Right (and The Daily Swarm)
In the film, Kanye plays himself drunk at a club acting belligerent and boastful, telling starstruck club-goers that the song playing in the club is his. He wanders into a side room where he encounters a beautiful woman. They start having sex and then he passes out on her leopard print dress. When he comes to, he finds himself in the VIP room with his pants down – he was hallucinating and fucking the pillow. The realization startles him and he rushes to the bathroom where he vomits what look like rose petals.

Then it gets weird.

Kanye finds a bowie knife in the bathroom and cuts into his stomach, spilling a torrent of more petals. He digs in the knife deeper and then with his hand rips out a small furry rodent, like a demon, only its quite cute. When Kanye realizes it’s connected to him with an umbilical cord, he pulls it hard, ripping it out of him for good. He then puts the demon on the sink and hands him a tiny bowie knife to fit the critter’s scale who then uses it to commit hari kari.

The short, written and directed by Spike Jonze, walks the fine line between self aggrandizement and self mockery that runs through all of Kanye’s endeavors. But the filmmaking is on point, with cinematography and sound design that authentically renders that feeling of being really disoriented in a nightclub. One doesn’t need to love Kanye to love the film, but the Jonze short takes what people love and hate about Kanye’s persona and then pushes it into a new, trippy realm. And in case you’re wondering, the answer is no, Kanye still can’t act. The film features the song “See you in my Nightmares” from 808s and Heartbreaks, remixed and pretty severely tweaked by Spike Jonze’s brother and N.A.S.A.‘s Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel).

Credit to Spike Jonze for the concept. To say how much this will ACTUALLY emulate Kanye's persona after exorcising that little demon, only time will tell. As a huge Kanye fan through the thick and thin, I'm hoping for the best.

(I wish I had a download link for the Nightmares Squeak E Clean Remix playing in the background.)

Happy Birthday Derrick!

Yesterday the Kaiklians had some friends and family over to watch the Angels/Yankee game and to have some drinks and food. Thanks for hosting guys. I would have had more pictures, but I was fixated on the game and left right after.

We got a pretty good representation with an elder from each of the families. I bet one of our parents has a picture like this somewhere...
Don't mind Denson. This pic was taken shortly after the loss.

Happy birthday Derrick! AKA Dinky, always and forever.

Family trip to Vegas for the Pacquiao/Cotto fight and Sheryl's birthday? I think so...

Oct 09: MLB Playoffs @ Slater's 50/50

October is in swing with the cooler weather, the NFL Season, NBA preseason, and the MLB playoffs. I love it.

On Friday I got dinner with Jen, Brian, and special guest Andy (aka Andy Pandy). We hit up Slater's 50/50 to take advantage of the happy hour appetizer/pitcher special as well as the Anaheim Angels fanbase we would expect to be there.

Two pitchers (Widmer Hef and Stone Arrogant Bastard) for the three of us... I was a tad bit overzealous in ordering this.

Vampire dip is a must everytime, especially at 50% off during happy hour.

Combo appetizer plate: sliced pickle chips, sweet potato fries, and fried onion strings. All winners.

And another amazing discovery: bacon salt. I'd love to have this on a baked potato... or anything for that matter. "Everything should taste like bacon." Touché.

The crowd was surprisingly filled with a lot of families with kids. I think it was a way for the dads to catch the games and keep the wife and kids happy too. Hi Brimo.

"Oooh this is a cool shot Jon-Jon let me take your picture." -Jen.

"Oh I want one with that background too! Let's switch." Ummmm.... sure.

Flat panels everywhere. I was able to catch the end of the Yankees/Twins game and a majority of the Angels/Red Sox game.

I got a Hawaiian style burger: beef patty with American cheese, red onions, grilled pineapple, fried egg, and baconnaise spread on a whole wheat squaw bun. This will probably be the last time I'll get baconnaise since it's so salty. No complaints on the grilled onion or fried egg though!

The bill came with some 'mints'. Hamburger gummies! F*ckin' awesome.

The damage done. We tried, and failed.

A sneaker day at work too. What One's Wearing: Poorman Kid Robot Air Max 1s. I got these black/gold air maxes at Blends SD during their sale and swapped some pink laces on them in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

And over the weekend SoCal brought out the brooms and cleaned up shop.
Saturday: The Dodgers sweep the Cardinals.

Sunday: The (Anaheim, in my book) Angels sweep the Red Sox.

Freeway World Series in the works? Epic.

F*CKING SICK!!!

U-N-I - Pulp Fiction ft Fashawn (Video)

Sorry no real blogposts yet. Check out my friends' blogs on the sidebar!

Here's a video from the SoCal duo U-N-I (Thurzday & Y-O). Pulp Fiction is by far my favorite track on the A Love Supreme mixtape because it's such a raw-sounding storyteller track. It definitely reminds me of the old Phone Tap video by The Firm.

Throwback Pic: Halloween 1990

I'm gonna try to play this year. I just can't figure out what to be. I can always try to find my old plastic turtle shell...

Left to right, top row, bottom row: Trishia, me, Cassey(?), David, Brian, Jennifer, Jeremy, Mark. I don't think I've seen Brian smile so big.

Bonus throwback. This might be '91 or '92, Nice face Jen. You sure don't look like a Disney princess looking all pissed off and sh*t. Jeremy's got a legit pirate costume! And Brian, how do you go from Pinocchio to a grim reaper x glam Jason crossover?
